This is Nereocystis luetkeana or Bull Kelp, one of the most common kelps around here. June is the month when it reaches its maturity, so we start to find lots of it along the beaches. These floats measure about 2-3" diameter, and they can grow to about 4" diameter, with the stem growing to 118' long! These are smaller stems, only about 4' long, however. To the left is a frond from Seersucker Kelp that got mixed in with the Bull Kelp.
