I have become interested in the distribution of the native land slugs of North America. Identification can be tricky and sources for identification seem to be incomplete, inaccurate, scattered, outdated, understudied and limited leading to the native slugs being misidentified. I am aiming to pull together a collection of observations to raise interest, aid in the identification of native species and to help serve present and future researchers. Many native slugs will not be able to be identified from photographs alone. When photographing slugs, a side shot with the pneumostome (breathing hole) which is usually on the right side of the slug is probably the best shot. A shot from above and a photograph of the sole can be extremely useful as well. I carry a small metal ruler in millimeters for measuring purposes and usually include a shot with the ruler. Noting what color the mucus is can also aide in identification. When bothered, slugs will often secrete a slime that is extremely sticky and can be white or milky, orange or clear. Many native slugs in North America have a mantle that covers the entire body of the snail. I will add more information as this project gets under way.
