A community science project called Project Phoenix begins today, Aug. 1: it concerns birds in California and their distribution during times of smoky wildfires and clear skies. It is the creation of UCLA & Natural History Museum joint postdoctoral researcher, Olivia Sanderfoot.

The project aims to have observers note birds in their neighborhood for 10 minutes a week through the most fire-prone months of the year (August–October). These data will then be analyzed to learn more about bird responses to smoke from wildfires. Beginner birders are welcome and encouraged to participate – no previous birding experience is required.
