RD still has wahlbergi as a ssp of Trachylepis striata http://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/species?genus=Trachylepis&species=striata&search_param=%28%28search%3D%27wahlbergi%27%29%29
Are you suggesting that iNat deviate from RD and split Trachylepis striata?

@alexanderr perhaps you would know?

Posted by robert_taylor almost 6 years ago

I would stay with RD, there is clearly doubt about them being full species. We can only wait until someone tackles this group.

Thanks Scott and Alex, I am happy to stay with RD then. I will resolve this flag

Hi guys, this has now been resolved, both subspecies have been elevated to species level (and reflected on RD)

@robert_taylor and @alexanderr I'm not sure the details but looks like RD now does have wahlbergi elevated to species status but we have it as a ssp here

Should we elevate Trachylepis striata wahlbergi? If so I think we need to split Trachylepis striata. Does anyone know the respective ranges?

isn't super helpful since it doesn't cover the range of wahlbergi

Yes let's do it. I think quite often people (at least I do) add the subspecies for T. wahlbergi, but not for T. striata. Not sure how this will affect the split.

We can use Branch 1998 as a rough guide for the ranges, I will send you an email.

Cheers

@alexanderr thanks for sending the ranges. Its interesting that we have T. striata observations all the way up into East Africa but both of these ranges stop in southern africa. Are they not global ranges or are we not properly identifying East African lizards given the taxonomy?

Posted by loarie about 3 years ago

No problem, no these are only southern African ranges, so they exclude the northern ranges. T. striata extends into East Africa, I'm not sure where T. wahlbergi stops but I suspect it also gets further north.

Yeah it should work fine, thanks
