Abbott transferred this species to the genus Polygaloides in 2011. The GoBotany/Flora Novae-Angliae taxonomy dates from about that time, so doesn't include it, but both Weakley's flora and Abbott's Polygalaceae treatment for Naczi's new manual use Polygaloides. Per our TPL tiebreaker rules, we should stick with Polygala, but I hate to make the swap when we'll probably just have to swap it back to Polygaloides when NEFWS updates their taxonomy.

@loarie, TPL is outdated. Plants of the World Online (POWO) is more updated. Perhaps we should change from TPL tiebreaker rules to POWO tiebreaker rules?

Abigail Barker (@ambarker) at Kew says that a new version of TPL (which behind the scenes will be the same as POWO and the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families) will be available very soon. I'd be curious to know if she recommends waiting for that or moving to POWO in the interim

Oh, good. At one time, I was pretty actively trying to feed taxonomic fixes for ferns (usually missed synonymies) back to IPNI and Tropicos, but while people seemed grateful, the lag in response time got so bad I eventually stopped trying. Maybe they're making some progress on semi-automated fixes.

I just checked in with Abigail and she clarified:

1) the new version of TPL won't be called TPL - lets call it the 'new kew portal'

2) the 'new kew portal' will be a different interface but will have the exact same data as POWO

3) she recommends switching from TPL1.1 to POWO

Everyone here on board with that idea? if so we should prob propose it to the community more widely

Works for me. (And it would resolve this particular issue in favor of Polygaloides paucifolia.) It's missing a lot of ferns, though, as I find on a quick check--we may have to let people fall back on TPL (unless there's a big bolus of data incoming to POWO) for things that aren't there yet.

POWO works for me too.

We have developed a names backbone building on IPNI and the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families to underpin the Plants of the World Online (POWO) portal. Given that the backbone is effectively, a curated resource, we think it is a good substitute for TPL until such time as it is updated by the World Flora Online community. The backbone will be imported into POWO this weekend and it will include ferns (but not bryophytes). We would be happy to work with you to build a service to supply you with the data in an automated way but in the meantime, we can provide iNaturalist with a download as requested. We hope this will be of use to you and the wider iNaturalist community.

I have been asked when we will be able to provide the names POWO backbone to iNaturalist. We are working on his now and should be in a position to provide a copy next week.

I've committed the swap, given that POWO supports Polygaloides along with many other authorities.

Started discussion in https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/346487 to finish splitting off the new segregate genera from Polygala. Please chime in there!
