Doesn't the most recent comment on the thread (4th) as I write this suggest it is valid?

No. To summarise: Linnaeus named this species C. clatratus. To people familiar with botanical and zoological epithets that might look like an error for C. clathratus (to be corrected under the code). However, in Latin, both clatratus and clathratus are recognised (as meaning lattice-like). The former is rare, but still correct and not an error by Linnaeus or the compositors. So that spelling should not be corrected under ICZN and the correct name is therefore Carabus clatratus, and not C. clathratus.
