seems to still be Asiomorpha coarctata in Millibase - are you able to try to get them to make these updates?

Millibase has issues. It currently lists both Asiomorpha coarctata (De Saussure, 1860) and Orthomorpha coarctata (Saussure, 1860) as accepted species. A recent review of the genus Orthomorpha in Vietnam prefers to treat coarctata as Orthomorpha using morphological features, yet notes "Molecular evidence, however, shows a very strong genetic isolation of coarctata from the other formal congeners, thus favouring the recognition of Asiomorpha as a separate monobasic genus"

Millibase offers no help here, treating both as accepted. It has similar issues with other taxa, e.g. Harpaphe haydeniana and "Paimokia haydeniana"

ugh - that duplication in Millibase is no good. I wired up a deviation https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_framework_relationships/352118

So we're sticking with Asiomorpha coarctata or changing to Orthomorpha coarctata?

The name Orthomorpha coarctata appears to be more commonly used historically per a 2013 worldwide catalog of Paradoxosomatidae (pp. 1236-1238), yet since 2000 the two names have been roughly even. The team of Likhitrakarn, Golovatch, and Panha, who have published several recent taxonomic works on Orthomorpha (e.g. 2010, 2011 (genus revision), 2014 , 2019) use Orthomorpha coarctata, despite conflicting molecular data that would render Orthomorpha paraphyletic (they most recently consider most of their own "and all previous molecular evidence as only subordinate, provisional, and auxiliary.")

I'm in no place to predict what future molecular studies may indicate, but a broad sense Orthomorpha that includes coarctata appears be somewhat favored in the balance of recent primary sources. That said however, I think using status quo (Asiomorpha coarctata, no change) would be the simplest and best course for now, even if representing a slight minority of uses, rather than risking needless changes back and forth in the future.

I emailed the Millibase taxonomic editor to give them a heads up about the duplication. If they are responsive and update Millibase it would be awesome to see if we can get a little 2-way co-curating going. if they're not responsive, we can discuss how severe the Millibase issues are and if we can bridge them with deviations or need to abandon them as an external reference. I really you and @jiangyou lending your Millipede expertise here

The taxonomic status of this species is controversial. Prior to the release of specific relevant studies,I also think it's better to keep the name unchanged.

millibase continues to have both Asiomorpha coarctata http://www.millibase.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=946229 and Orthomorpha coarctata http://www.millibase.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=952609

we currently have Asiomorpha coarctata (with Orthomorpha coarctata as a synonym)

Sounds like we're sticking with Asiomorpha coarctata for now? I'll close this flag

@loarie I recently had a millipede expert contact me about this who noted iNat was using the wrong name. I just checked Millibase, and they now have Orthomorpha as the accepted genus, and Asiomorpha as unaccepted (https://www.millibase.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=946229), ie there are no longer active profiles for both

are you ok for me to swap this species back into Orthomorpha?

Posted by thebeachcomber about 1 year ago

cool - lets wait until Apr 1 when the monthly WoRMs archive that iNat syncs with is posted, but sounds good

Posted by loarie about 1 year ago

all good to swap now?

Posted by thebeachcomber about 1 year ago

The WoRMs archive they're posting is still the one generated Mar 1. But go ahead if you want to

looks like millibase is now going with Orthomorpha coarctata https://www.millibase.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=946229
