endemicism in Australia should carry over to endemicism in Oceania, but it is listed as "native". |

maybe take up with the forum since its more of a feature tweak request and less of a taxon issue? |
I'm not sure why we added this validation but apparently its there https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/blob/master/app/models/listed_taxon.rb#L354
not sure if this is a tangent, but unlike how counties nest in states & staties nest in countries, countries don't nest within Continents (ie the US is partially in North America and partially [Hawaii] in Oceania) which has made it hard for me to embrace continents (though I agree they would be awesome if they nested)
@loarie I will make a dedicated post in the Forum but endemicism in a country does carry over to the parent continent for a taxon if the taxon lacks any verified observations anywhere at the time that the Establishment Means are entered in a country. As soon as the taxon receives a verified observation in the country it occurs, "Endemic" is carried over to the parent continent.
See the Sri Lankan Flapshell Turtle for example (https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/560423-Lissemys-ceylonensis): I entered it as endemic to Sri Lanka yesterday. But as soon as its sole observation was verified, that endemicism was automatically carried over to Asia too.
interesting, maybe it doesn't work if it already has an establishment means at all?
i.e.
not on checklist, no establishment means -->will update to endemic?
on checklist, establishment means = native --> won't update to endemic?
on checklist, establishment means = unknown --> will or won't update to endemic?
Place checklists don't populate "upwards" automatically. I tried to change it* from native to endemic to Oceania but get this error message:
Establishment Means can't be endemic for continents
