also, plantID.net calls R. armeniacus "Himalayan blackberry"

Seems this one has also been called "Himalayan blackberry" rightly or wrongly - see http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=242417158

Jepson treats Rubus bifrons as a synonym for R. armeniacus and calls it "Himalayan blackberry"

Both names are considered valid by POWO, the authority iNat follows, so there's no case for synonymising.

There is a good chance that one of the names has been misapplied, I think, something that frequently happens with invasive weeds from speciose genera. It also seems the colloquial name isn't appropriate for either since neither originates from the Himalayas.
@nancyasquith are you happy for me to resolve this flag now?

Please do. You are, of course, correct on all counts.

Your explanation has made me see that I was mistaken. Jepson's list of "synonyms" is also a list of "misapplied names." The Jepson entry for R. armeniacus lists R. discolor as the only synonym. Thanks for explaining and for applying your patience and expertise to address queries like mine.

@nancyasquith thank you. I find it quite interesting to dive down these taxonomic rabbit holes to see where they lead to...
