graytreefrog Holbrook’s Southern Dusky Salamander (Desmognathus auriculatus)

This species has recently been split into two species: Desmognathus auriculatus (the Southern Dusky Salamander), and Desmognathus valentinei (Valentine’s Southern Dusky Salamander).

Yes - we're currently deviating https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/27396/taxonomy_details until someone can help with the split. we need to:
1) draft inactive output children
2) create a draft taxon split
3) create atlases for each of the output children

I can do 1 & 2 but not 3 since I don't know the distributions of the outputs. Can you help?

Here's a link to an article about the description of the new species that includes a range map: http://novataxa.blogspot.com/2017/05/desmognathus-valentinei.html
I guess the Southern Dusky Salamanders between Georgia and Virginia are also considered D. auriculatus along with the eastern Gulf Coastal Plain populations.
I hope this is helpful!
@mpmoskwik is also very knowledgeable when it comes to salamander taxonomy and may be able to help as well.

The map that @lucareptile attached is the only one I know of that delineates the two species. Also - @lucareptile is correct that all populations north of Georgia (S. and N. Carolina and Virginia) are still considered D. auriculatus.
