laneallen | Pennate diatoms (Order Pennales) |
Pennate is a useful way of grouping diatoms by morphology, but it is outdated as a taxonomic grouping. https://diatoms.org/glossary/pennate |

You should make me a curator. I recently finished my masters so I finally have time. I'm already working on my PhD, so not really, but I would ultimately like to link diatom species information segments to diatoms.org instead of Wikipedia and I think that a cooperation between the two could be very useful. There's also lot's of small things that I'd like to do but would rather not bother other's over such as adding new taxa.
Curators cannot make other people curators any more; only site staff can. I think there is a link somewhere to an application process they implemented recently. I don't think it would be possible to link info to anything but Wikipedia, but that would also be something to discuss with site staff, I think.
My apologies, it has been a while since I have looked at this. I have a couple of other projects that have taken priority. I'll be pretty busy the next two weeks but after that I can take a look at this and try to work out a solution. Both regarding the treatment of pennates as well as diatoms as a whole. This will be a good topic for me to discuss with Mark Edlund, (@diatomaniac).
Pennales has no children on iNat.
It’s not in AlgaeBase.
I agree that it's no longer a valid taxon.
I can deactivate the taxon.
But, many obs are IDed with Pennales (almost 1000)
What should I do with them? Swap them to Bacillariophyceae?
Previously cited in the discussion: @laneallen @jameskm @diatomaniac ?
Top identifiers: @roman_romanov @roman-evseev @cmeckerman ?
I drafted the taxon change here: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/135214
@laneallen @jameskm @diatomaniac @roman-evseev @cmeckerman : do you agree?
@t_e_d Thanks. I agree.
I am a babe in the woods when it comes to the taxonomy of the diatoms but I spend a lot of time identifying them as part of my student's observations of pond water samples. I often rely on others like @roman_romanov, @diatomaniac and @diatomwu for confirmations. So I trust their assessment on the matter and I appreciate being included in the conversation.
@cmeckerman : taxonomy shouldn’t just be for taxonomists: it’s for everyone!
Agreed. They are spread through Bacillariophyta, and so should probably be swapped there.
