I know it is not the authority we follow, but Tropicos lists six authorities that all have this as instead a synonym of Luffa aegyptiaca, which is a species POWO accepts as well.

Yeah, GBIF accepts aegyptiaca as well as the accepted name, so there seems little support for cylindrica as a name, but inconsistency about what the accepted name is, although POWO's treatment seems in the clear minority.

Yeah, that was the point I was trying to make. It doesn't seem to be a widely accepted synonymy. But, perhaps it is based on some recent type study?

Indeed, the correct name for this taxon is Luffa aegyptiaca Mill., Gard. Dict., ed. 8, Luffa no. 1, 1768.
The type of Luffa cylindrica (commonly used name for many years) is Cucumis melo, so the next available name had to be found, which is L. aegyptiaca.
