joe_fish Brazilian Cocoa Damselfish (Stegastes variabilis)

all of the non-Brazilian observations should be S. xanthurus (recently split from S. variabilis). Can this be done with a taxon swap?

split

@loarie here's another pair of allopatric taxa that need splitting. please tell me there's a viable way of doing this other than adding new IDs to the dozens of existing observations.

This is what we call a "retroactive split" where S. xanthurus was added when it should have been split from S. variabilis.

So we need to create a new S. variabilis (sensu stricto), create atlases for both this and S. xanthurus, and create a split with S. variabilis.(sensu lato) as the input and S. variabilis (sensu stricto) and S. xanthurus as the outputs

Its odd that IUCN has a page for S. xanthurus https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/68308968/68308972 but not S. variabilis. Does the IUCN range for S. xanthurus look good?

What countries does S. variabilis occur in?

S. variabilis will be endemic to Brazil.
