We're lagging behind Reptile database here

should we maintain this deviation or resolve it?

I think we should resolve this deviation and recognize K. steindachneri as a full species. Per Borque (2016) there are no morphological data that support it being recognized as a subspecies of K. subrubrum, and molecular data have supported the view that it is a separate species. That position was also recently taken by the Turtle Taxonomy Working Group (part of the IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group).

I follow Crother (2017) and they split it back then.
