Let's just not touch xanti at the moment. It's not ready to be merged because POWO has screwed it up. If this is the wrong outcome, which it seems to be at present, then it clouds a pretty decent amount of observations into a single name. It will be a nightmare to return back to normal if the merge it committed.

POWO now lists xanti as a subspecies of S umbelliferum, rather than a straight-up synonym, not sure if that changes anything.

Solanum xanti is listed in POWO
https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:821564-1
Solanum xanti A.Gray
This is a synonym of Solanum umbelliferum var. xanti (A.Gray) D.J.Keil

The issue is POWO has mixed up a few Solanum and so we have to deviate on some of them, at least.

how do you distinguish xanti from other S. umbelliferum (sensu POWO)? Range? characters?

Locally they are distinct but apparently that isn't the case everywhere, hence the great fluctuations in these two taxa and what they encompass. It makes sense up north to lump them, but down south it doesn't. Either outcome seems to fall inconsistent with the respective parts of the state...
