liliumtbn | Typical Towhees (Genus Pipilo) |
Is it possible to get the Spotted × Eastern Towhee hybrid added? (Pipilo maculatus × erythrophthalmus). This is a very common hybrid especially in the central US (https://ebird.org/species/x00446) |

Hybrid added. |
@loarie /kueda As Aves taxonomy cannot be edited by regular curators, would one of you please add this hybrid taxon? This is a common (475 eBird observations) and well-documented hybrid found across the Great Plains, even discussed long before the parent species were split. Almost all of the hybrids in iNat (I've seen ~25 of them) are currently listed under either of the parent species, or stuck at genus level. I know iNat's current position is to exclude most hybrids, but in my opinion this certainly is a permissible one. Cheers!
In the meantime you can ID it to the closest described taxon (e.g. genus) and use tags, observation fields or projects to track hybrids. There are hundreds of open flags for bird hybrids to be added and we don't have the capacity to vet these (they're not in Clements) nor the desire to bloat the taxonomy with so many hybrids. @maxkirsch might be able to help add these hybrids and create the deviations but I'm focused on the Clements 2021 update. kueda is not a bird taxon curator
