Sounds like you've got most of the steps there. I haven't read the paper but here's what it sounds like needs to be done:
1.\ Create new taxon for Cicadetanna (genus)
2.\ Cicadetta calliope - Cicadettana calliope calliope (create new taxon, and commit taxon swap)
3.\ Cicadetta floridensis - Cicadettana calliope floridensis (create new taxon and commit taxon swap)
4.\ Cicadetta camerona - Cicadettana camerona (create new taxon and commit taxon swap)
5.\ Cicadetta kansa - Cicadettana kansa (create new taxon and commit taxon swap)
6.\ Cicadetta texana - Cicadettana texana (create new taxon and commit taxon swap)
7.\ Cicadetta sensu lato ---taxon split---> Cicadetta sensu stricto + Cicadettana ''
If it's possible to create atlases for the output genera in step 7, that would help reassign genus IDs to one or the other. If/where the ranges overlap, genus IDs will be reassigned to the parent - assuming those are in the same subtribe - Cicadettina.
@bouteloua I can manage up to 6 but I'd prefer some help with 7. Messing that up could cause rather serious problems on iNat.
yeah for sure - do you want to draft it and I can review before committing anything?
There is no "create an atlas" link in the "Edit" menu for taxa above species, but you can plug the taxon_id into this URL for the new genera:
@bouteloua Yikes. I don't want to mess up all of this. Those are the changes that need to be made based on the most recent literature but I'm afraid of messing up anything more complicated than creating taxa. The swaps are just daunting. I'll create the taxa at least.
I know the feeling. Head to https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/new to draft a taxon change. When you save it, it is just a draft. You have to save and then separately press Commit for any changes to be made. After saving, but before pressing commit, I can take a look :)
@bouteloua The old taxa that I think you made inactive were grafted wrong. Just delete all the proposed taxon swaps. I made new ones that were done right . I'm so sorry!!!
@bouteloua
I give up.
When the ones I made were made inactive I just recreated them, but they were all grafted wrong.
Cicadettana that is grafted to Cicadettini is incorrect as are the children grafted to it, and the Cicadettana calliope calliope and C. c. floridensis grafted to Cicadetta.
The one grafted to Cicadettina is correct as are all its children. Now I can't find any of them to fix and delete the taxa that need to be deleted
Yeah unfortunately when they made the new header search, they didn't build in a way for curators to find inactive taxa. So you have to click More>Taxa Info in the header navigation, then use the search bar on the top right of the page. Once you search for Cicadettana, you can click "Show active and inactive taxa", which brings you to here: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/search?is_active=any&q=cicadettana&utf8=%E2%9C%93
(see related feature request to improve this search functionality)

Added sources to the new taxa and taxon changes
Created taxon for Cicadettana ramosi
Committed taxon change Cicadetta calliope --> Cicadettana calliope calliope https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/80423
Committed taxon change Cicadetta floridensis ---> Cicadettana calliope floridensis https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/80454
Committed taxon change Cicadetta camerona ---> Cicadettana camerona https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/80455
Committed taxon change Cicadetta kansa ---> Cicadettana kansa https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/80456
Committed taxon change Cicadetta texana ---> Cicadettana texana https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/80457
Created atlases for output taxa and committed taxon split Cicadetta sensu lato ---split into---> Cicadetta sensu stricto + Cicadettana https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/80453
not a problem at all. it was a complicated one for sure :)
also it may take a little bit for all the changes to go through. There aren't a ton of observations associated with these, but once you get a couple hundred or more, sometimes it can take over an hour for all the changes to happen.
please continue to reach out with any questions!
Marshall, D.C. and Hill, K.B.R. 2017. A new genus for North American Cicadetta species (Hemiptera: Cicadidae). Zootaxa 4306: 537-550
This paper enacted the following changes
Cicadetta calliope - Cicadettana calliope calliope
Cicadetta floridensis - Cicadettana calliope floridensis
Cicadetta camerona - Cicadettana camerona
Cicadetta kansa - Cicadettana kansa
Cicadetta texana - Cicadettana texana
The changes have been made on Bugguide and need to be made here. Cicadetta can't be swapped for Cicadettana generally as it only affects NA species so each of the above needs to be changed individually, C. calliope needs to be made a nominate subspecies and C. floridensis needs to be made a subspecies of C. calliope.
This is WAY beyond my skill as a curator but would love it if @silversea_starsong, @sambiology or @bouteloua would help me through the process.
