@cooperj I found this that anticipated some further work synonymizing L. populinum, L. quercinum, and L. aurantiacum: http://10.1111/j.1469-8137.2004.01090.x, but haven't found the anticipated work. At the same time, this: https://www2.clarku.edu/faculty/dhibbett/mbinder/pdf/complete%20supplement.pdf seems to suggest that either L. aurantiacum should be even more widely circumscribed, or that L. populinum and L. quercinum should be good species (from this paper: http://www2.clarku.edu/faculty/dhibbett/mbinder/pdf/Binder%20&%20Hibbett%202006.pdf).

The synonymy of all three under aurantiacum was accepted by Noordeloos in the recent Flora Agaricina Neerlanica vol.7. He quotes the 2004 work. I think we should go with that view. It is probably the latest/only published opinion.

However, for what it's worth, the current sequence data support synonymy of populinum and quercinum, but aurantiacum is less certain. There are sequences both from Europe and North America labelled that which are not the same as populinum/quercinum and instead cluster with sequences labelled vulpinum, arbuticola, piceinum and versipelle. Whether some or all of those are misapplications I don't know, but clearly species concepts remain a bit fuzzy.
