esummerbell | Interrupted Fern (Claytosmunda claytoniana) |
Should be merged with its synonym Osmunda claytoniana. Looking at various databases, Osmunda claytoniana seems to be the most widely accepted of the synonyms: http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:281799-2 |

Well...it might drag on a while before resolution. :( The basic issue is that forming a Code-compliant name for the nothogenus formed by Osmunda x Claytosmunda yields wretched results, something like "x Osmundclaytosmunda". Some well-placed people tried to fix this by describing "x Osmuntonia", but that name is invalid under the Code, and I would imagine trying to emend the code on intergeneric hybrids at a botanical congress would ignite some lumpers-vs-splitters conflict.
@choess - if we're pretty confident about moving to Claytosmunda and intentionally deviating from POWO (https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77166339-1 - anyone reach out to them yet?), it's also no big deal to graft Osmunda x ruggii onto Claytosmunda. We've done that for many taxa not yet renamed.
(issue again recently flagged https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/576469)
Yeah, known issue. PPG I, which I usually try to follow, splits off Claytosmunda and Plenasium and this seems likely to hold up, but it creates some nomenclatural issues with Osmunda x ruggii that haven't been resolved yet.
