Merge O. echios vars. into O. galapageia.

Comments

@najera_tutor there are varieties of Opuntia echios now grafted under Opuntia galapageia after this taxon change: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/84486

These need to be swapped with their appropriate variety names in O. galapageia.

POWO lo tiene diferente
http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:290998-2

Whether we follow POWO or Lodé, we can't have Opuntia echios variety names grafted under Opuntia galapageia. They all need to be converted to equivalent Opuntia galapageia names.

Here is what is currently listed under
Opuntia galapageia Galápagos Prickly Pear

Opuntia echios var. barringtonensis
Opuntia echios var. echios Tree Pricklypear
Opuntia echios var. gigantea
Opuntia echios var. inermis
Opuntia echios var. zacana
Opuntia galapageia var. echios
Opuntia galapageia var. galapageia
Opuntia galapageia var. macrocarpa
Opuntia galapageia var. profusa

I guess I'm partly responsible for this since I posted the original flag on O. echios. My apologies.

The solution depends on whether we want to be liberal and accept some infraspecific taxa below O. galapageia or take the conservative approach and reduce them all synonyms. Pragmatically the latter would probably be the easiest to implement with a taxon merge. That would agree with Lodé's treatment but not that of POWO.
The alternative seems to be to create several new subspecies for the names under O.echios that currently don't appear under O. galapageia (i.e. barringtonensis, gigantea, inermis and zacana). Also in that case any occurrence of echios needs to be replaced with myriacantha. A more difficult task requiring several taxon swaps.
Taxonomically the real question is, are there real significant differences between these forms that justify their acceptance?
