Swap done |
@beetledude - what do you make of the synonyms on iNat?
Lots of IDs based on Common name?
see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?locale=en&place_id=113055&preferred_place_id=113055&taxon_id=201702&view=species
I drafted swap that probably should be, but can't be, deleted until after the Bioblitz freeze. There is currently a deviation for this species, but no source for the deviation. @loarie
You added Archispirostreptus gigas - I thought that we had to desist until after the freeze?
OK: we can commit it afterwards.

Cool: There are a whole lot of observations that can now be committed from generic level to this species.
You can create taxa, just not commit (or apparently, delete) swaps during the freeze.
The problem with the swap - which I don't want committed - is that the Archispirostreptus gigas already existed: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1238108-Archispirostreptus-gigas, and the one that I accidentally added is surplus to purpose.
I dont see any pre-existing taxa

Just the one you created.
Since you created it I reviewed the group, and identified a whole lot of candidates, which it turns out have been incorrectly identified in the past, as African Giant Millipede Archispirostreptus gigas instead of African Giant Millipede Spirostreptus spp. - part of the confusion of common names, and only having a few instances of the common name listed on iNaturalist - so that most people are unaware that the name is used for many species.
I see Doratogonus is also known as Giant Millipedes in South Africa, so there is even more confusion ...
Unfortunately, ID of many Spirostreptidae requires dissection.
So we might even have to retreat to Family level, even for these giants.
@loarie - what is the rationale for the deviation. Why only these two species and not all of the genus Archispirostreptus ?
I also dont see any flags or explanations for why this deviation was done. Is it discussed anywhere? Should deviations not be justified rather than merely posted?

Hmm - not sure. Sorry for not documenting that. I added a link to this discussion from the deviation https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_framework_relationships/429865
I think its safe to assume no good reason to deviate and would be great to get in line with Millibase. Lets resolve this deviation once the content freeze is over
