I wrote to the authors of the paper and the corresponding author Neelesh Dahanukar replied with:
"Hydrophylax bahuvistara is not endemic to the Western Ghats of India. It is literally widely distributed in peninsular India and that is why it is named as "bahuvistara" (Sanskrit, bahu = wide, vistara = distribution). If you see the original description we have comparative material from Eastern Madhya Pradesh on the border of Chhattisgarh. The species is also found in eastern Maharashtra. Based on the photographs available on the inaturalist database that you shared, the species from Chhattisgarh and Odisha are Hydrophylax bahuvistara."
I tried to capture that in the ranges as follows (via a modification of the IUCN v2021-2 range for H. malabaricus sensu lato). And if no one objects I'll retroactively split Hydrophylax malabaricus to help with all these clashing IDs
Ok ranges updated and split https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/98539
We've got a log of confusion surrounding Hydrophylax bahuvistara and Hydrophylax malabaricus and a retroactive split on iNat might help. The paper that split off bahuvistara describes the north/south boundary in the Western Ghats but doesn't address frogs in Chhattisgarh and Odisha

what should these frogs be considered
