I guess we should do a taxon swap with this species going to the genus Socca only (as most will have to be reidentified)???

Does NZ only have Socca pustulosa?

Yes, in NZ we only have Socca pustulosa.

Posted by danilo_hegg almost 2 years ago

Yes, this is correct per current understanding.

Yes by far the most obs are in NZ, and as far as the research shows, only species in NZ is S pustulosa .
So makes sense to do a species to species swap.
When I was asking the question about the transfer , I was under the impression that taxon swaps can be tailored to region, but no-one seems to have mentioned anything about that.
For a while now I have been resigned to having to go in and push back each non-comfirmed Oz Socca back to genus once we have the swap.
Volker informed me that the reason it is taking so long for WSC to update the Socca species is the journal the paper was published is being slow in providing them the appropriate documentation.

I think we can use an atlassed swap but I've struggled with them before.

Above my pay grade. But...

@cmcheatle might be able to help plz?

Posted by dave_holland almost 2 years ago

Am I correct in assuming the swap is still moot until a WSC update?

Posted by russellclarke_dea... almost 2 years ago

Yes, I don't think we should go ahead until then.

Posted by reiner almost 2 years ago

Sure. I'll keep an eye out.

I see you opted to force the change to species level throughout the region and not NZ only.
I wonder who will volunteer to fixup all the Australian Socca that are now wrongly ided as pustulosa

Posted by suzieandjim over 1 year ago

Does Socca pustulosa need to be split? If so what are the output taxa and their respective ranges?

Posted by loarie over 1 year ago

Its probably not that simple. There are 12 new Socca species in Oz, a number of which used to be called pustulosa , many of these have overlapping distribution.
Basically for most of the old E pustulosa ids in most of Oz unless we can clearly see the venter , it would be hard to id to species.

Posted by suzieandjim over 1 year ago

do you want to handle by adding disagreeing IDs, splitting, or reworking species Socca pustulosa as a complex? knowing the 12 species would be helpful

Posted by loarie over 1 year ago

Well I was hoping that for most of oz that pustulosa would be pushed back to genus as probably few obs would have enough detail to be able to confirm as pustulosa, so would have been easier to change a few to species which were obviously pustulosa, than to disagree on the majority of them. Not really a fan of complexes, but thats just me.

S. pustulosa

S. arena

S. australis

S. caiguna

S. elvispresleyi

S. eugeni

S. johnnywarreni

S. kullmanni

S. levyashini

S. plea

S. sydneyica

Some only found in WA so a little easier, but a few species overlap in NSW VIC and Qld

S. senicaudata was not part of the original pustulosa complex so thats a bit easier.

Now that its done, probably best to leave the species swap as-is and slowly get around to disagreeing.
