POWO lists a formula so it probably should not be used as a catch all
I agree it probably shouldn't but there are 1,400 observations with this ID so far and looking over those it seems to be a very mixed bag of all sorts of hybrid rhododendrons and azaleas. Most of them are marked casual. So clearly people are using it for cultivated hybrids of all kinds of parentage. I usually just ID to genus and add a comment saying it's most likely a hybrid cultivar.
Yeah this seems to happen every time POWO decides to accept '× hybridum' as a name even if they specify the parents they are referring to
In POWO, it lists specifically R. maximum x R. viscosum for this. Is that the only hybrid that this is applicable for, or is this supposed to be used for any and all Rhododendron hybrids?
