over enthusiastic establishment means

Jan. 14, 2023 17:40:54 +0000 nathantaylor

All descendant locations in North America reset to unknown. Mexico, United States, and Canada reset to native.

There are almost 7500 establishment means records. How do we even get to them all? Just because this species is commonly used as a mail order butterfly, I have found no evidence that it is establishing in most of North America. It is known as a migrant with large emergences some years where it fans out widely across continents.

I've never heard a convincing argument as to why this species shouldn't be considered native to North America in the first place.

Yes, and in case I wasn't clear, this species appears to be native to North America and several other continents. Some mail order butterflies may be released but I have seen no evidence that these are establishing populations that persist.

It's a cosmopolitan sp. This taxa is well known to have been in North America well before mail-in butterflies were even a thing. No reason for it to be marked as introduced to the continent.

How can we fix this? Is there a list that can be checked? Can someone run a script to cascade the value for all places nested under a larger place? It's down to 7100 records so a few people have made a run at it. Long way to go.

No idea but there needs to be a solution. Reverse whatever gave it the tag of introduced in the first place. No reason for a native species to be marked as introduced over half it's entire range.

Are there any places in North America where the species is known to be non-native?

If not, I can just apply native status to all descendent places in North America (or at least the US).

Not to my knowledge. If there is then someone can just manually change it to introduced for that one location

I agree, and at this point, any useful introduced information is completely buried by the rest. There is also the question of whether to reset to unknown or native status. At present, I'm planning to reset to "unknown" for all descendants of North America, labeling as native to the United States, Canada, and Mexico (without descendants) afterward, and then letting the remaining information be filled in by others as needed.

For the record, it looks like someone changed the establishment status from native to introduced on North America and then applied it to all the descendants.

Ok, I went ahead and committed. If you want me to add native status back to any locations individually, please provide a list. The countries in the Caribbean and Central America are all listed as unknown currently. The native status should be re-added to those individually (I can do that if provided with a list or someone else).
