Ok wait I do see an issue...
Mammal Diversity states:
"split from L. braccatus (and from L. colocola after being lumped); previously known under the name munoai, but the name fasciatus (previously a synonym of L. pajeros) appears to represent the oldest name for this species"
L. munoai is on iNat despite not being recognized by MDD:
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1240546
I think they need to be lumped?
"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/362776347_The_oldest_available_name_for_the_pampas_cat_of_the_Uruguayan_Savannah_ecoregion_is_Leopardus_fasciatus_Larranaga_1923 this seems to suggest so: Since Larrañaga's fasciatus represents a senior synonym of L. munoai, it takes precedence and, in compliance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, it must therefore be used to refer to the "Uruguayan" pampas cat, L. fasciatus (Larrañaga 1923), for which we suggested the vernacular name "Larrañaga’s pampas cat"."
just adding this here as well
@safron thanks for noticing this, MDD lists L. munoai as a synonym of L. fasciatus https://www.mammaldiversity.org/explore.html#genus=Leopardus&species=fasciatus&id=1006000
I'll lump now
please contact Nate Upham at mammaldiversity@gmail.com if you have questions or feedback about their treatment of these 2 taxa and iNat will follow any changes made on their end
Howdy, folks. I just wanted to clarify that the Mammal Diversity Database originally acknowledged Leopardus munoai as a distinct species in following Nascimento and Feijó (2020), which I used as the basis for this taxon split.
I know this matter is resolved - I just thought that providing some additional context would be helpful.
This taxa seems to only exist on iNat, is it a diversion from other sources?
