Both names are in use; the Ruggiero et al. reference even lists them both as equivalent (in one of their tables). I personally like Volvocales because it's shorter; also, Volvox is the older name (1758 vs. 1834 for Chlamydomonas) so I've always thought it had a better claim to the order :) - but I don't think it is formally resolved, at least not to my knowledge.

Chlamydomonadales and Volvocales are synonymous with one another. Currently we have both the orders, which leads to confusing situations (like Chlamydomonadaceae being in a different order than Chlamydomonadales). AlgaeBase uses Chlamydomonadales, but I've seen both names used around in literature, which one is preferred?
