Replaced taxon with fixed spelling |
Thanks for looking into this. Although it might be easier to ask the question about the spelling of the name on this same page. I'll tag @fateryga and you can discuss the spelling.
GBIF has the two 'variants' as being by same author/paper Kostylev, 1940 so the likelhood they're different taxa seems absurdly low (but not impossible!) As a noun in genitive - masculine singular honorific, you'll need the original spelling in that Kostylev, 1940 paper to decide. I was betting on "kiritschenkoi" when i first read this, but there's a bunch of other species elsewhere as " kiritshenkoi" and "Kiritshenko" as an author, e.g. "Kiritshenko, 1916", onwards
@ajamico @sjl197 We can wait for fateryga to also reply, although a few things can be inferred now. The first GBIF page with the extra 'c' (https://www.gbif.org/species/1329274) is from Zobodat as the GBIF reference taxon. I've been helping GBIF document errors needing correction via GitHub for a couple of months, and Zobodat made numerous mistakes, including mispelling entire scientific names, and in some ways disorganizing of the entire Vespidae taxonomy. The second GBIF spelling without the extra 'c' (https://www.gbif.org/species/10794270/treatments) would be my best prediction of the accurate spelling, since it's from a publication, which is coauthored by fateryga.
While unideal, in general minor mispellings of scientific names or authority names are somewhat common in literature, and most common for difficult or long names.
Great, I also made a request for COL and GBIF to only keep one taxon page with the correct spelling (https://github.com/CatalogueOfLife/data-vespoidea/issues/2).
Fixed the spelling with the new taxon, which has replaced this one: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1473004-Onychopterocheilus-kiritshenkoi
Thank you all for all the help! :)
GBIF and the Catalog of Life Checklist both have this species as Onychopterocheilus kiritschenkoi (Kostylev, 1940): https://www.gbif.org/species/1329274.
However, there's also Onychopterocheilus kiritshenkoi (Kostylev, 1940): https://www.gbif.org/species/10794270 (notice the missing "c" in the specific name).
Are these two spellings of the same species? Or are they actually two separate (unfortunately named) species? I assume they're the same, but since I don't have any expertise in this area I want more input before adding the second name as a synonym.
