elacroix-carignan | hop sedge (Carex lupulina) |
creating a Carex lupulina complex |

complex has been created |
This species complex is potentially not a natural group, but I need additional data to back this up. In any case, I feel this complex has its place on a citizen science platform like INat, because most of the photos on the site do not show achenes, the only reliable character to tell carex lupulina and lupuliformis apart.
@elacroix-carignan iNaturalist has added a provisional group being called the "Carex hirta clade which is likely the same as what you allude to, a group far from section Squarrosae sensu stricto. does that suffice for your request?
(similar to C. frankii versus C. aureolensis)
See this discussion if you want to get up to date on this : https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/623066
This complex would include Carex lupulina and Carex lupuliformis. These two species are best distinguished by the shape of their achenes, and on INaturalist this character is most often not seen in photos. These two species belong to the "core sect. Lupulinae". The sect. Lupulinae will eventually be split into two section, one including Carex intumescens and Grayi and the rest belonging to another group. Creating this species complex will make this swap easier in the future so that fewer observations stay IDed under sect. Lupulinae (in the broad sense including intumescens)
