Looks like a deviation was created some time ago when POWO only accepted P. monophylla: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/552668/taxonomy_details
As recently as 10 months ago, POWO had a monotypic treatment of P. monophylla: https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/590249
Now POWO accepts Pinus californiarum: https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:282863-2
But reduces P. monophylla subsp. fallax to a synonym of P. edulis: https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77095009-1
Elevating P. monophylla subsp. californiarum would require an atlased split of P. monophylla. Do you have a county-level map of the ranges of P. californiarum and P. monophylla in California?
I've reviewed the range data on these taxa, mainly relying on herbarium collections supplemented with some field investigations earlier this spring. Generally they have a climate/habitat divergence with P. monophylla on colder/wetter sites e.g. with Artemisia tridentata, Pinus ponderosa, P. coulteri; and P. californiarum on hotter/drier sites e.g. with Cactaceae, Agavaceae, Fouquiera. P. edulis var. fallax is almost entirely east of the Colorado River. There is some ambiguity in the area from the New York Mtns. to the Spring Mtns., with P. monophylla at higher and P. californiarum at lower elevations and occasional presence of var. fallax. There is also some ambiguity in the eastern Transverse Ranges, e.g. Big Bear Lake to Mt. San Gorgonio, again with P. monophylla at higher and P. californiarum at lower elevations. In this area P. quadrifolia seems to mainly be associated with P. monophylla, which helps simplify the division.

Seems to be a good amount of recent molecular evidence:
