unless another known/accepted infraspecific exists to be split out, this should be merged

I'm not a Populus expert, but I think this can be merged. Presumably this is a holdover from when related species (e.g. Populus trichocarpa) were considered to be part of Populus balsamifera?

ah, that makes sense! I keep forgetting about that time, especially with Populus trichocarpa being much the more famous in this genomic era nowadays.
swap drafted... will wait a couple days for any additional input and then merge if none is forthcoming. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/129512

I don't know if there's a more direct way of doing it, but you can search for inactive taxa through the taxon change input/output search bars to see what prior action has been taken in cases such as this one.

Yes, P. balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa was previously the other infraspecific of P. balsamifera, and was swapped into the species: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/68147-Populus-balsamifera-trichocarpa
