species activated |
it's a group of extremely similar species. I am not a supporter of the utilization of subspecific ranks at any cost. In this case, from a taxonomic point of view, the subspecific rank for some of these taxa could be justified because of these taxa are mostly vicariant. Others seem to be relatively well distinct and could deserve the species rank.
Anyway, I would just say that elevating the rank of all of these taxa to species here in iNat would just be useful to have observations properly identified more easily. Otherwise, there is a certain possibility that some observations will remain identified just as S. squalidus s.l. because some users do not confirm the identification at subspecific level.
Thank you for asking.
