Regarding the discussion (https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/359079) about the prevalence of the older name "Solanum styleanum" I think there is currently consensus on the usage of Solanum nitidibaccatum in POWO, WFO. .. following the proposal of Särkinen & Knapp, 2022 (TAXON, 71(5); https://doi.org/10.1002/tax.12815).

I agree with this as well. S. nitidibaccatum is the generally accepted taxon name, and S. physalifolium var nitidibaccatum should be merged into it.
I agree we should try to follow POWO, who recognise it as a separate taxon to S. styleanum and treat it at the rank of species. We should wait to hear from @bouteloua who created the previous merge proposal and might know more.
I deleted the draft taxon change from 2019 since POWO must have changed since then. Thanks for checking in.
