cwbarrows Fountain Grass (Cenchrus setaceus)

it's not clear why this was changed? The linked citation does not seem to mention this taxon, and other sources still list Pennisetum setaceum as the accepted name.

When citing a source for taxon changes, it's not always clear that the source is a specific page rather than the entire website, e.g. http://ww2.bgbm.org/EuroPlusMed/PTaxonDetail.asp?NameId=7100819&PTRefFk=7100000 (where it shows Cenchrus as accepted by this website) vs http://ww2.bgbm.org/EuroPlusMed/ (the main page of that website)

Looks like Pennisetum is the accepted name according to GrassBase though, which iNat uses.

It looks as though the name change originates with this paper: Phylogenetic studies favour the unification of Pennisetum,
Cenchrus and Odontelytrum (Poaceae): a combined nuclear, plastid and morphological analysis, and nomenclatural combinations in
Cenchrus, M. Amelia Chemisquy, Liliana M. Giussani, Marıa A. Scataglini, Elizabeth A. Kellogg and Osvaldo Morrone, in
Annals of Botany 106: 107-130, 2010. That paper is available online.
iNat typically relies on authorities (e.g, as Cassi mentions, GrassBase) rather than chasing each new paper, since a change reflected by an authority indicates wider acceptance. Unfortunately this is just one of many examples where authorities disagree.

i think this should be changed back. The name change apparently is not consistent with iNat taxonomy protocol

Thanks! I would have done it but after the great oxalis crisis of 2014 (?) i am afraid to do taxon merges and swaps.

haha which species?

Was that worse than the great Potentilla Pestilence of 2016?

The Plant List (listed as an iNaturalist authority in the curator's guide) also recognizes Pennisetum setaceum. FWIW, ITIS recognizes Cenchrus, likely based on the paper above. In the meantime, thank goodness for synonymy.

Let's not forget the still-unresolved Parthenocissus Panic of 2016!

@bouteloua This taxon was just swapped again back to Cenchrus, which is what POW has but GrassBase still lists Pennisetum. Argghghghg

It seems like this might be premature OR an inevitable change that will be made by everyone OR some third (4th...nth) situation not listed here
