Central American Indigo Snake

Drymarchon melanurus

Summary 2

The Texas Indigo Snake is the largest snake that occurs in Bexar County. The regularly reach 6-7 feet in length as adults and are quite heavy-bodied. They eat snakes, frogs, toads, rodents, turtles, rabbits, birds and almost anything else they can grab hold of. They are "famous" for their ability to eat venomous rattlesnakes although they certainly don't specialize in eating venomous species.
This snake is probably extirpated from Bexar County. There are still records for the deeper canyons of the Hill Country west of Bexar County and they still occur in the Tamaulipan scrub country south of the county.
