Feral Pigeon

Columba livia domestica

Summary 4

Feral Pigeons, also known as Rock Pigeons or Rock Doves, are the classic urban bird. These doves are uncommon visitors to the Arboretum (usually spotted flying overhead or sitting on power lines), but they are extremely common in the urban areas around the sanctuary. There is a large nesting flock at the intersection of 610 and Woodway where you can see many different colors. Domestic pigeons were brought over from Europe along with the original settlers, and quickly escaped to form wild colonies. Modern domestic pigeons (bred for food, racing, or simply to look pretty) constantly escape captivity and continue to add new colors and patterns into our wild city pigeon populations.
