Motorbike Frog

Ranoidea moorei

Summary 5

A large, muscular and very common frog endemic to southwest Western Australia with moderately long and powerful limbs. The distribution of this western species marginally overlaps with the more eastern range of the otherwise almost identical Ranoidea (Litoria) cyclorhyncha and indeed there is a poorly defined hybrid zone occurring from near Albany to the northern slopes of the Porongurup range. The calls between R. moorei and R. cyclorhyncha are very similar but with a slightly higher pitch for R. moorei. The only reliable way to distinguish between R. moorei and R. cyclorhyncha is whether the thighs are spotted or not and the hybrid is presumable somewhere in between. Spawn is laid in a large floating mass attached to vegetation throughout summer.
