Shape: Understory tree
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, 1/3-2 inches long, green with red stamen/style
Leaves: oval, pointed tip, double toothed, hairless, 2-5 inches long and 1-2 inches wide
Bark: grey, smooth, wood underneath rippled and sinew-like
Fruit/Seed: 2 ¾ inch long elongated cluster of small, greenish, hairy nutlets attached to large, leafy, three lobed bracts
Height: 20-35 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: hardwood forest, swamps, stream banks
