Shape: Multi-stemmed understory tree
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: Males; yellow/brown elongated cluster – catkin, 3 inches long Female; brown bud, red stiles at tip
Leaves: 2½-4½ inches long, 1¼-3 inches wide, widest above the middle, taper to sharply pointed tip, rounded to somewhat heart-shaped base, edges coarsely double-toothed
Bark: new twigs are green/yellow, mature bark brown with scattered white lenticels
Fruit/Seed: round nut, 1/3-½ inch in diameter, within green husk, husk has long tubular beak at least twice as long as the nut, is ruffled at tip, and covered in bristly hairs
Height: 10-20 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: moist to dry; open woods, thickets, river banks, fence rows
