Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, males yellow and ¾-2 ½ inches long, females green-red 1-3 ¼ inches long, male and female on different plants
Leaves: egg shaped, 1 ½-4 inches long, up to 1 ½ inches wide, 1-4 times longer than wide, rounded teeth, leaf stalks red
Bark: gray
Fruit/Seed: cluster of red capsules, inflated base that tapers to a long beak
Height: 1-13 feet
Flowering: May - June
Habitat: conifer swamps, bogs, fens, sloughs, shores, floating mats
