National tree of Chile (found on the 2000 pesos bill)
Tall tree, up to 50 meters
Young trees have a greater symmetry and a more elegant look
Dioecious species (male and female plants)
Produces cones that are ready in feb-march
Each cone contains about 200 nuts that are edible (generally consumed roasted)
Generally grows in the mountains, at elevation above 800 meters above sea level
Because of the prevalence of similar species in ancient prehistory, it is sometimes called a living fossil
Its conservation status was changed to Endangered by the IUCN in 2013 due to the dwindling population caused by logging, forest fires, and grazing
