Johnny Darter(Etheostoma nigrum) live in many bodies of water (creeks, rivers, lakes, reservoirs), typically preferring sand/gravel substrates and slower moving water. Feed on smaller organisms found on the bottom of water bodies. Johnny Darter are found through the most of the Mississippi River drainage.

How to recognize: Generally small and slender, reaching 1.5 to 2.8 inches (3.9 to 7.2 cm). Markings resembling "W" or "x" shapes can be found on sides of the fish running along the lateral lines. Darters have two dorsal fins, the first being spiny and the second soft. Large fan-like pectoral fins are used to hold station in flowing waters.
