INTRODUCTION

  • Non Venomous
  • Also called : Nagarjunasagar Racer.
  • Very fast moving and slender snakes.

IDENTIFICATION

  • Slender body with smooth scales and yellowish belly with dark patches on the edge.
  • Dark grayish dorsal color and become faint towards posterior.
  • Creamy, round edged bands with black margins start behind neck, disappear towards tail.
  • Head with arrowhead pattern & somewhat broken V-pattern joining eyes. Large round protruding pupils.
  • Confused with Graceful racer and Russell's Kukri. Grow to 2-3 feet on average.
  • No pattern towards posterior unlike Graceful racer that has black patches.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

  • Southern India - Deccan Plateau of Andhra, Karnataka, Telangana & Tamil Nadu.
  • Inhabit dry rocky terrain of the deccan plateau in moderate elevations.
  • Hide under and between boulders and dense bushes.

DIET AND BEHAVIOR

  • Feed on geckos and small rodents..
  • Diurnal activity and is mainly terrestrial.
  • Alert and quick to flee. Restless, but non-offensive when handled.
