INTRODUCTION

  • Non Venomous
  • Other names : Olive Forest Snake.
  • Very rare and unique species endemic to the Western Ghats.

IDENTIFICATION

  • Medium-sized slender body with glossy smooth scales.
  • Dorsal is olive brown with four discontinuous lines of black patches.
  • Moderate sized patternless head with large rostral scale and small eyes with almost vertical pupils.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

  • Endemic to Hill Forests of Western Ghats and Rarely Seen.
  • Found near temporary and permanent water bodies like streams and pools.
  • Hide in leaf litter and also open areas near pools in monsoon.

DIET AND BEHAVIOR

  • Feed on slugs and soft-bodied worms.
  • Semi-aquatic, Nocturnal but also found during the dayhunting on stream beds foraging for slugs.
  • Usually non-offensive. Very little known about this species.

Other Rhabdops 2

This unique genus of the subfamily Natricinae and has only 2 recognized species.

  • Water Rhabdops (Rhadbops aquaticus) : Endemic to the Western Ghats.
