Characteristics:

  • Wingspan: 1 5/16 - 1 3/4 inches (3.4 - 4.5 cm)
  • Narrow, pointed forewing
  • Upperside of wing is black
  • Forewing: dull brown patch towards end
  • Hindwing: white fringe on the outer margin, copper-red tint

Host plant: Reported hosts include New Mexican locust (Robinia neomexicana), bur clover (Medicago hispida), deerweed (Lotus scoparius), desert ironwood (Olneya tesota), and vetch (Vicia species)

Nectar plant: No specified flower species

Distribution: Southern California to Argentina

Where can you find me on campus? 2

Currently, there is only one observation of the Funereal Duskywing on campus; this observation was on a lantana flower. These butterflies do not, however, have a preferred nectar plant, so it is possible that this butterfly occurs around other areas on campus, but more data needs to be gathered to make a prediction.
