Coral Hairstreak

Satyrium titus

Description 2

The ground color is typically pinkish gray, subtly different from the color of our other Satyrium hairstreaks. This species has no tails (though note that tails often break off from species that do have them, so the absence of tails is a field mark that must be used with care). Coral hairstreak has a row of black spots, rather than white banding, crossing its wings, it lacks the usual Satyrium blue spot at the anal angle, and it has a row of orange spots running along most of the margin of the hindwing. This species exhibits a single flight period (adults can be expected from early July through late August) and is usually found in open areas that feature a mix of herbaceous and shrubby vegetation.
