Edwards' Hairstreak

Satyrium edwardsii

Description 2

Similar to banded hairstreak, but instead of bands of dashes across its wings, Edwards' hairstreak has a line of neatly defined ovals, each with a dark center and outlined in white. In other respects, this species is a typical Satryium hairstreak, with a blue spot at the anal angle and an orange spot above it. Edwards' hairstreak is largely restricted to areas rich in its host plant, scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia). But since scrub oak is a very common shrub on the Vineyard, dominant in some extensive sections of Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, Edwards' hairstreak is something of a Vineyard speciality. If you visit its habitat, it is easy to find during its single flight period from late June to mid-August.
