Mole crickets are difficult to mistake for anything else. They are rather large at 19-33 mm (0.75-1.3 in). This is the only species that occurs in Iowa. The song is also distinctive. There are long-winged individuals that are able to fly and may be attracted to lights.

Statewide. Occurs throughout most of the eastern U.S.

Habitat 6

Wet, usually muddy ground near water bodies where it digs burrows.
