Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper

Arphia xanthoptera

Identification 6

Adults appear in the fall, probably beginning in August in Iowa. Note uncut, prominent crest on pronotum. Wings usually yellow, but may be red. Hind tibia blackish. Other Arphia species occur in the spring and/or have smaller pronotal crests.

Occurrence 6

Statewide, perhaps missing in northwest IA.

Habitat 6

Sunny open areas like fields, prairies, open woods, dirt roads.
