Plains Lubber Grasshopper

Brachystola magna

Identification 4

One of the largest grasshoppers in North America. Flightless and robust. Brown or green, sometimes colorful.

Resources 4

Occurrence 4

Knutson and Jacques (1935) and Knutson (1937) did not report this species for Iowa. SCAN shows 3 records for Iowa. One record is from 1936 in Plymouth County (https://scan-bugs.org/portal/collections/individual/index.php?occid=19878653). Two other records from 1965 seem strange because they come from Scott County Park in the east side of the state, well outside the known range of this species (https://scan-bugs.org/portal/collections/individual/index.php?occid=1120560, https://scan-bugs.org/portal/collections/individual/index.php?occid=1120613). This would be an interesting target species for any naturalists at Scott County Park. I have a strong suspicion it was actually a Sioux County park.

Habitat 4

Grasslands, often in association with sunflowers.
